Study Guide for Social Studies Native Georgians Test

Test is Tuesday, Dec. 17^th

-More and more settlers came to Georgia.  The effect this had on the Creek and Cherokee was they had to give up more land.

-The Trail of Tears was a long, hard 800-mile journey that the Cherokees took from Georgia to Oklahoma.

-One of the ways the Cherokee did NOT travel along the Trail of Tears was on trains.

-After the Trail of Tears and today most Cherokee and Creek live in Oklahoma.

-The Cherokee left their homes and moved to Indian Territory because settlers came and forced them out.

-The Cherokee newspaper, the “Cherokee Phoenix” is important because it printed news about the Cherokee government.

-After white settlers came to Georgia, the Cherokee and Creek began to take on some of the settler’s ways.  Both and Cherokee and Creek began to dress like settlers.

-The Creek used mud, twigs, and tree branches to build their homes.

 

-The Cherokee used many things from nature.  To help keep people from getting sick and for healing the Cherokee used different plant parts.

-Sequoyah was willing to spend many years working on his alphabet.  This is an example of the character trait of patience.

-The difference between Creek summer homes and winter homes were that there were no walls.

-When Sequoyah let people pay him later for goods from his trading post, he showed compassion.

-Sequoyah saw that Georgia settlers could read and write in English.  He wanted the Cherokee to learn how to read and write in Cherokee.

-The two Georgia heroes that had trading posts were Mary Musgrove and Sequoyah.

-Sequoyah showed good character traits by showing patience and compassion.

Week of 12/16/13

Dear Parents and Students,

On behalf of my family I want to wish all of my students and families a very Merry Christmas and enjoyable and SAFE winter break.  Please note that there will be no school from December 23-January 6th.  Students will return on Tuesday, January 7th. 

Here is what we will be doing this week leading up to Winter Break:

Reading:
This week will be a review week in Reading.  We will be covering: Story Structure (Beginning, Middle, and End) focusing on the Polar Express with Interactive Flipcharts on our Smart Board!  We will also review the 5 W's (Who, What, Where, When, and Why) related to the Polar Express.  Main Idea will also be reviewed and Cause and Effect.  I traditionally use the Polar Express book to integrate these Reading Standards especially before the holidays.  Please note there will be NO spelling/phonics skill this week.  Our only homework will be to read 30 minutes nightly and review for our Social Studies Test.

Social Studies:
Friday we sent home our Social Studies study guide.  Please review with your child prior to the test.    As stated last week, our Social Studies test will be Tuesday, December 17th.  For the remainder of the week, we will continue to review Sequoyah and the Trail of Tears doing a culminating writing activity in which the students pretend to be Cherokee Indians!  We also have a fun activity planned during our Social Studies block with Mrs. Tanksley's class for Science and we will be making Ice Cream!  Should be a great week of learning!

Writing:

In writing we will be wrapping up our All-About Books and the students have been working on topics such as:  Cheerleading, School, Outer Space, and Family.  I am eager to see the finished pieces!  We will also be doing a verb activitiy called Angry Verbs (inspired by Angry Verbs) and the students will be creating their very own Angry Bird and highlighting verbs.

Other Notes:
I have sent out an email blast with a link to sign up genius for our upcoming Holiday Party scheduled for Thursday, December 19th.   Please note the most important items are the Mason Jars.  If anyone is willing to pick these up, I would greatly appreciate it!

Mrs. Tanksley and I are doing a cookie activity that will require several supplies. I would greatly appreciate if any generous souls would be willing to donate these items. Please email me: dowd@fultonschools.org if you have any additional quesitons.

We are also in dire need of extra pencils, markers, dry erase markers, and sanitation wipes.  I would appreciate any donations for our kids!

Upcoming Social Studies Test

Parents,

Our next Social Studies test will be on Tuesday December, 17th.  It will cover native Georgians including Sequoyah, the Creeks and Cherokees.  I will be sending a study guide home with your child on Friday.  We will do a final review on Monday, and take the test on Tuesday.  I will also be posting the study guide onto my blog.

Week of 12/9/13

Greetings Parents and Students,

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  We have officially 10 school days until Winter Break and I encourage all my students come rested and ready to go each day.  We have some wonderful activities planned for our Winter Party as well, so Parents please stay tuned to the Blog for updated information I plan on posting this week.  Also, if any parents are feeling generous we are in desperate need of santitizing wipes, extra pencils, playdough, dry erase and regular markers for the classroom.  Your generosity is most appreciated.  Now let's get down to business!

What are we learning this week?

Reading-
This week we will be focusing on Cause and Effect relationships within a Fiction and Nonfiction Texts. Our phonics skill will be words with Schwa sound and Compound Words. Please remember to have your child read 20-30 minutes nightly and complete Spelling Choice Boards by Friday.  Also please remind your child that Literacy Centers/Station in class are worth 40% of their grade.  This is a time to be used productively and wisely!  Thanks for your support Parents?

Writing/Language Arts-
The students will continue creating "All About" books on their favorite topics and our grammar skill will be present tense verbs. The kids have been working hard on their All About Books! 

Social Studies-
We will continue our Unit on Native Georgians and we will once again focus on Sequoyah this week.  The children will be creating their very own alphabet as Sequoyah created his and it should be a fun week of activities!

Week of 12/2/13

Welcome back Parents and Students! 

I hope everyone had a wonderful week off and got to spend some down-time with family.  I was thrilled that I was able to spend some extra time with my wife and son!

The students will be creating "All About" books on their favorite topics and our grammar skill will be reflexive and possessive pronouns. I am eager to see what kinds of topics the kids choose to write about! 

Social Studies-

We will begin our next Unit on Native Georgians and we will focus on Sequoyah this week.  The children will be using KWL charts and Post-Its to review they will learn and we will also be creating vocabulary flipbooks!
